The Presidio - 31 Hours in San Diego Part VI (Last One)

San Diego Presidio Site
According to the historical marker at the site, "Soldiers, Sailors, Indians and Franciscan Missionaries from New Spain occupied the land at Presidio Hill on May 17, 1769, as a military outpost.  Two months later, Father Junipero Serra established the first San Diego Mission on Presidio Hill.  Officially proclaimed a Spanish Presidio on January 1, 1774, the Fortress was later occupied by a succession of Mexican forces.  The Presidio was abandoned in 1837 after San Diego became a Pueblo."

On this hill, July 16, 1769, Padre Junipero Serra and the soldiers of Spain set the Royal Standard, raised the Cross, and dedicated the Mission San Diego De Alcala.

I'm always intrigued by scenes like this...

US, Mexico and Spain.
This is the same flag seen in the Old Town San  Diego pics.  The flag sits on the site of old Ft. Stockton.

The 500 Member Volunteer Army of the Mormon Battalion

While preparing for their exodus to the Great Salt Lake in 1846, Mormon pioneers were asked by the US Government to establish a 500 member battalion for service in the war with Mexico.  The troops set out from Western Iowa in July, 1846, and arrived over 2000 miles away in San Diego on January 29, 1847, completing the longest infantry march in history. The expedition helped the US win the war and set the stage for the colonization of the Southwest.

I hope you've enjoyed my tour of San Diego as much as I have!!!  Thanks for looking............

Coronado Island -31 Hours in San Diego Part IV

Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888, and on the list of National landmarks.
After visiting Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs Beach and Fort Rosecreans, I stopped at Adalbertos Mexican Food at 23rd & Market in Sherman Heights.  A local cop took me there a few months back when I was in town and it quickly became my favorite Mexican food in town.

Housed in an old Cali-style Taco Bell, Adalbertos is some of the  best Mexican food you'll find.  Looks like they have one in Sacramento too.

After lunch, it was on to Coronado Island which is the home of one of my favorite beaches,  Coronado Beach and the Hotel del Coronado which, I assume, does not have Government rates so is not an option for me when I travel there!!!

It was awesome to walk in the surf!  Times like this, I really miss Cali.....
Now, I didn't take this picture, you know, because I don't have a plane and I still can't fly (Tried once but it REALLY hurt jumping off that roof!)  I saw these sand dunes and mounds from the ground, but I had no idea they spelled out the name of the beach!  The Hotel del Coronado is to the left of the pic.  These shots were taken along the beach at the top of the pic.
Looking NW toward Point Loma.  Sunset Cliffs Beach and Ocean Beach were just around that point.

Footprints in the sand.

What a great day at the beach!!!!!!!!!!

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery -31 Hours in San Diego Part III

Continuing my travels along the coast, I moved South from Sunset Cliffs Beach to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, which overlooks the city of San Diego on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Fort Rosecrans is named after William Starke Rosecrans, a Union general in the American Civil War and has interred our veterans since the 1880's.

Of all of the National Cemeteries I've been to, this one is unique in that from just about the entire grounds, you can gaze out at the water which gives the whole place a completely different feel.

Surfers at Sunset Cliffs Beach - 31 Hours in San Diego Part II

Traveling South from Ocean Beach in San Diego, I came across several surfers at Sunset Cliffs Beach.   I spent some time sitting at the top of a cliff just enjoying the California scene!!!!
