2012-03-17 Fredericksburg Battlefield and National Cemetery

On St. Patrick's Day, we took my parents to visit the Fredericksburg Battlefield and National Cemetery. Anais and I had been there several times, but this was my first visit with the new camera. Hopefully, this will be the first of several postings of my pics.

Canons on the hill at Marye Heights overlooking the Sunken Road.

This house sits adjacent to the Sunken Road where one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was fought. The house still bears the bullet holes from the war.

Looking out from Marye Heights toward Downtown Fredericksburg.

This wall lines the Eastern side of the Sunken Road. It was the dividing line between Union and Confederate soldiers, many of whom died on both sides.

Now the wall serves a much more serene purpose.

I'm loving the new telephoto lens! (I believe I'll be saying this a lot!!!)

I can't say enough good things about the Canon Rebel T3i!

We saw several hawks in the area.

The National Cemetery. Over 12,000, of the 15,000, or so initially interred here in the 1860's were unidentified. The short markers contain 4 and 5 unknown bodies each.

This cemetery is a very tranquil place, especially when there are no other people there!
